Purple Folders

Your child will bring his/her Purple Folder home daily.  You may find important information about upcoming events or practice papers from your child’s day in this folder.  Please note- class work that comes home in your child’s Purple folder is only checked for completion.  They go directly with topics we are working on for the week.  Please review them with your child.
Please check & initial behavior calendars each day.

Homework

Nightly reading is expected from day one but sight word and/or word study homework will not begin until AFTER fall PALs.  If your child brings home an unfinished page in their Purple folder, please complete it and return it to school the following day.

VIP Folders
(Very Important Papers)

Each Friday  your child will bring home their VIP Folder. This folder will have any graded papers that were completed the previous week.  Papers with grades lower than 80% should be redone at home with parent help and returned to school.  All other papers can be kept at home.  Please initial & return the folder to school each Monday.

Discipline Plan
In order to foster a positive learning environment, students will learn and practice 5 rules with accompanying gestures:

1.    Listen when your teacher is talking.
2.    Follow directions quickly.
3.    Keep your hands and feet to yourself.
4.    Raise your hand to speak and stand.
5.    Be safe, be kind, be honest.

Clip It!  Behavior Chart
We will use a clip chart to monitor behavior.  A clip chart is a tool that allows students to be rewarded for positive behavior while discouraging negative behavior.

Each student has a clip with his or her name on it.  We will start on green (Ready to Shine) at the beginning of each day, and clips can be moved up and down throughout the day based on behavior.

·      The STAR STUDENT  (pink) level is reserved for outstanding behavior.

·      Students can move to the TOO COOL (purple)  level for continuing to display good behavior.  You should be very proud of your child for reaching this level!!

·      Students will move to the "SCENT"SATION  (blue) level for showing that they are making the right behavior decisions.  Ending the day on this level is great!

·      Every student will start the day on the READY TO SHINE (green) level.  As the day goes on, clips can be moved up and down, based on behavior.  This level is a good one to be on.

·      A student will be moved to the THINK ABOUT IT  (yellow) as a warning about his/her behavior and as a reminder to follow the rules.

·      Students who continue to display poor behavior will move down to the TEACHERS CHOICE (orange) level.  Here, the teacher can decide what action to take.  Loss of recess or center time is to be expected.

·      When a student moves to the ROUGH WATERS (red)  level, the teacher will notify parents via note or phone call.  A visit to the office might also be in order for repeat offenders.  Students on this level may also lose privileges.

Rewards

The class also works together as a whole group to earn rewards for desired behavior. We add shells to a sand bucket each time the class receives a compliment from any adult in the building for exhibiting desired behaviors as a group.  Once the bucket is full the class will have a popcorn party.

Other positive reinforcements for behavior include, bubble gum, ice cream, cookies, etc. to enjoy during the day.   Other rewards include extra recess, stickers, a good note in the agenda, or a positive phone call home. Also, the choice of sitting with a friend from a different class at lunch, or free choice during computer lab could be offered as a reward.
